Why do young students especially benefit from fun worksheets? Because first grade spelling students and second grade spelling students have so much to learn! As we all know, once young minds get distracted, it can be very difficult to get them back on track! When students see the same familiar formats over and over, as in many workbooks, it is all too easy for them to yawn, scribble a bit and move on to something more interesting.
It is amazing the difference in effort you will get from worksheet to worksheet. Granted the amount of effort may vary immensely from year to year depending on the group of students you have. However for the most part, when a worksheet is needed to help drill down a procedure, standard, or lesson, its effectiveness can and will vary.
My students are engaged in the activity because they are always eager to find out what the next scene will be, and how the math problems will be nestled within. They also like how within each handout I inscribe the title in a way that fits with the theme of that particular scene – another attention catching technique. And since this review activity only takes about fifteen minutes of class time, it is quick yet extremely beneficial.
For example, since I want to make sure my students get accustomed to reviewing the various math concepts and standards we’ve learned all year, I have them practice regularly. I want them to get to a point where they are so familiar with grade level math content, that solving these types of problems becomes automatic.
3) The best first grade worksheets and second grade worksheets are written at the right level of difficulty. Worksheets are not fun if they are way too hard or way too easy. As you probably know, early learners are easily frustrated if something is too hard. On the other hand, if a page is too easy, it is a waste of time and resources for everyone. Strive to assign pages in which students have to work a bit to succeed.
Another important point I keep in mind is that I never want this regular math review time to take up and hour of class time. I want it to be quick but effective. This is not instructional time, but time for the students to review material they have already learned.
